New developments in Khobragade case

Khobragade

The Devyani Khobragade issue has seen several developments today. Devyani is understood to be currently on a flight back to Delhi. The Government has given her a new posting in the External Affairs Ministry in Delhi.

In the afternoon, the Indian Government is believed to have requested the US Embassy in India to send one of its officials back to America. This official is reportedly of a similar rank to Khobragade and has been involved in her repatriation.

The United States had earlier let go of Devyani in consideration of her diplomatic immunity. However, they were clear to mention that the charges against her were still pending and that she would be tried for her charges if she re-entered the country without diplomatic immunity.

This has angered some people in India, including her father Uttam Khobragade and some members of the opposition. BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said todayĀ that this development should be taken as a ā€œdefeatā€ for the Congress considering that the charges have not been dropped entirely.

On December 11, 2013, Devyani Khobragade, then the Deputy Consul General of theĀ Consulate GeneralĀ of India inĀ New York City, was charged by U.S. authorities with committingĀ visa fraudĀ and providing false statements in order to gain entry to the United States for a woman of Indian nationality, for the potential employment as a domestic worker for Khobragade in New York.

Khobragade was arrested the next day by U.S. federal law enforcement authoritiesĀ and was then subjected to a search of her body cavities commonly called a “strip search”. Her arrest and treatment have received much media attention particularly in India, and have led to a major diplomatic standoff betweenĀ India and the United States.

The onus purely is on US, to give the pace / direction & depth to the Indo – US partnership. The US surely can weigh the Pro’s / Con’s of the merits or the lack of it in trumping its Ego over meaningful partnership with India. The US President needs to intervene to set Right the Wronged. As not only the aura of His high office get enhanced but it also reverses potential permanent damage to the TRUST factor in the Indo – US relationship. The Q, however that needs to be asked is – does the US President have the Moral Strength to not only Pardon the Indian Official but also to Apologize to the Govt. of India.
