‘Secular’ Plea Causes Split in Bollywood

Several Bollywood actors, directors and scriptwriters’ appeal to the Indian voters to vote for a secular party has caused a split in the film industry from the middle.

In an open letter addressed to the citizens of India, 60-odd film personalities have appealed the nation to protect the secular foundation of the country which they have put as need of the hour. The letter goes on to say that corruption and governance are important issues but the country will have to vigilantly find out ways to hold the government accountable for that. It strongly advocates the India’s secular character which has been termed ‘unnegotiable’.

The letter adds that as Indian citizens who love their motherland, they appeal to the voters of the country to vote for the secular party, which is most likely to win in their constituency.

The open letter has been signed by eminent film personalities like Vishal Bhardwaj, Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar, Govind Nihalani, Aditi Rao Hydari, Mahesh Bhatt, Shubha Mudgal, Kabir Khan, Saeed Mirza and Nandita Das.

Actor-Director Nandita Das said that the appeal in many ways is a call to vote against not only Narendra Modi but all other parties which have divided people on communal lines in the past and still continue to profess the same.

The letter was drafted by scriptwriter Anjum Rajabali who said the sense of India comes from the country being a secular and added that people have been compelled to speak up because the idea of secular India has been challenged and vulnerable in the current scenario. He went on to say that the right wing fundamentalist forces within the BJP are making the young citizens feel very insecure.

However, another section of the fraternity rejected the view. Veteran scriptwriter and father of Salman Khan, Salim Khan, who inaugurated the Urdu version of the Narendra Modi’s website on Wednesday, said his relations with the BJP leader were based on his articles in Urdu. Khan asserted that nobody is untouchable for him and said that when Narendra Modi had come to Mumbai, he had expressed his desire to meet him to which he obliged. Khan has defended Modi in the 2002 riots saying Muslims are much more secure under Modi than anywhere else in the country. His son, Super Star Salman Khan had also told that Modi does not need to apologize for riots in Gujarat.

Many other film personalities have called the appeal a conspiracy and an unwarranted paranoia. Director Madhur Bhandarkar, expressed his view on microblogging site twitter saying he was shocked to see some of his colleagues under the garb of stalling so-called divisive forces, are themselves dividing a secular fraternity like Bollywood. He hope for a better sense to prevail and called on the industry to elect Narendra Modi with a thumping majority stating it is time India got a visionary leader like him.

Actor Tusshar Kapoor also took on to social networking site and said that secular card is being stretched a bit too far in order to cover up the corruption and bad governance. He said no party can claim the secular prize.

Many film industry members like Ajay Devgn, Suniel Shetty, John Abraham, Preity Zinta, Raveena Tandon and several others have reached out to Narendra Modi. Eminent personalities like Lata Mangeshkar and Anupam Kher have even voiced out their support to Narendra Modi

For an industry that has often been accused of being indifferent to elections, the fierce war of words is extraordinary.
